In learning any programming language, there's a 99% chance that your first exercise is to print "Hello, World". I remember my fascination in IT grew as I learned the fundamentals of programming -- learning the (Java) syntax, writing simple codes and eventually, writing lines of codes that work! At the end of the term, (and with an "A" in CS21) I asked myself "am I now qualified to be a programmer?"
Yes! Definitely has the potential to be a programmer but not necessarily a software engineer. Alas, there are many aspects necessary before a programmer can call himself a software engineer. Do you know how to gather requirements? Will you be able to come up with a solution if a problem is presented to you? Can you work with a team? Do you understand the software development cycle? And aside from the first programming language that you learned, there's a number of software technologies and libraries that you need to understand.
In 2006, we created a training program called Exist Code Camp. The program's goal is to prepare aspiring students and fresh university/college graduates as they get into the world of software development. We expect these aspirants to be armed with the fundamentals of IT. Through practice, we want these aspirants to learn professionalism... negotiating requirements, deliverables & deadlines, managing the expectations of your clients, communicating ideas & strategies, and the value of teamwork (understanding that each member's shortcoming affects the entire team). All of these while advancing your technical competence. We want to turn fresh graduates into real IT professionals in 6 weeks.
Next year, we'll be conducting several sessions of G2iX University's Exist Code Camp. I'm personally, inviting all students and fresh graduates who are aspiring for a career in software development to join our camps in 2010. Watch out for our official launch on November 23.
