Economy Gets Tough on the CIO

Next to the CEO, no other position had been under a lot of pressure than the CIO to deliver results, especially in this tough global economy. Part of this may point to the fact that IT, while holding fort and keeping maintenance services for business, will be more crucial in light of possible personnel cuts. As a result, IT is seen as a savior in stepping in for the forthcoming cuts in resources. But is it really just a case of IT efficiency to be content with just 'maintaining all the lights' during this critical period? I believe that on the contrary, IT will need to play a more innovative role to be able move business beyond just survival mode and into a more stable position of business continuity. The IT department, under the CIO, will need to take the initiative to participate in innovation around the company’s business model, which goes beyond contributions just to product, services, and operations. As they say, managing infrastructure is worthless if the business fails.

So how do you get better business benefits from your IT investments? Does your CIO ensure that there is an active process involved in reviewing the best available (and less costly) IT solutions?
